As most now know, I am facing open heart surgery on August 6th to replace my aortic valve. Although I have known for 4 years that this day would eventually come, the day seems to be approaching at a rapid pace. To support the inquiries of so many great friends and family members I have created this blog with the purpose of providing an update on my surgery and recovery. Comments are encouraged! We have received three update calls from surgery. About 8:00 am they had made the incision and cut through the sternum....this was the most difficult call since we knew Jerry was dreading this part so much. The second call came around 8:45...they had disconnected his heart and connected Jerry to the heart/lung machine (life support). They fitted him for the mechanical valve and tested it for an hour. They also did a internal echo cardiagram before the fitting and afterwards. Our third call came 10 minutes ago... The valve is in, Jerry is breathing on his own and they have disconnected life support. They told us that the doctor is very pleased and the surgery was a success! They are closing the sternum now. The doctor should be out to talk to us in about an hour. Also they did not have to take his heart out to replace the valve and there was no additional heart componant replacements necessary as they originally thought. We are so thankful for the good report...we will update soon.

God is GREAT! Thank you for the update!
Just wanted to say that I am so thankful that God has brought you all through this. Last night as we were going through our nightly ritual with Poppy before bed, we joined hands for Uncle "G" and she bowed her head and prayed "Jesus help Uncle". All it takes is child-like faith. I am so overwhelmed by the mercy and loving hand of protection God has extended to my family. I appreciate Him so much. I wish I could be in that room with you all right now and feel that huge burden lifted. I'm with you in my heart...
