Well, Jerry slept better last night!!! He has experienced a series of negative symptoms that we have been concerned about so we called the doctor today. They said the night sweats are a reaction to being on life support during the surgery & should subside within a few days. The headaches are from the fluid restrictions that the doctor imposed but they have lifted that so hopefully he will get some relief once he gets enough water intake. His lack of appetite will probably continue for a couple more weeks. I can tell that he is losing weight & I'm sure the lack of food, specifically protein, is hindering his energy levels. The doctor stressed the importance of protein for the healing process so I'm going to do my best to incorporate as much as possible into his diet. Jerry is very quiet and his color isn't too good today & he refuses to lay down because he says it makes him feel worse. The nurses & doctors encouraged him to get showered & dressed in the morning & stay up all day with small resting periods from time to time. I think the key is to push through because exercise increases your strength & gets you on the road to recovery faster. We are trusting that God will bring everything together & Jerry will be back to himself very soon :) God bless all of you.

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
As most now know, I am facing open heart surgery on August 6th to replace my aortic valve. Although I have known for 4 years that this day would eventually come, the day seems to be approaching at a rapid pace. To support the inquiries of so many great friends and family members I have created this blog with the purpose of providing an update on my surgery and recovery. Comments are encouraged! Hey Uncle Jerry, just want you to know that we'll be praying for you. (And you also, Aunt Barb : )
Thank you for the return note in the Bible; it means a lot to me.
Love,
Sheri
Hi Uncle Jerry.
We will be praying for you guys tonight. We love you. I'm so sorry you are having a rough time... I don't know if you've ever tried soy beans, Edamame. It's one of our family's favorite things to munch on, especially Poppy's. Anyway it has lots of protein, and it's a nice break from meat. You might like that. But I know prayer will make the biggest difference for you. Just don't push yourself too hard. I know how these Garland guys are! lol
Awww...thank you girls...we love and miss you. I read your messages to Uncle Jerry and enjoyed hearing from you :) Thanks for the soy bean suggestion...we will give it a try. We are learning so much through this process and we're willing to try anything to help him feel better. The doctor said he can turn slightly on his side if we brace him with pillows...I hope that helps him sleep more. At the end of the day prayer is the only true help...God has been so good to us through the surgery and immediate recovery...& we are looking to Him for the rest of the journey. Thank you and please tell Scott, John and Poppy that we love them and are thankful for the prayers :))

Jerry, just got access to your blog. Great news to hear you're home. I know it will be a long road to recovery, but no one better or tougher than you to meet the challenge. Hang in there - my family has said a prayer for you the past month at church and will continue.

Smoothies King Orange Kabam with protein powder for excellent protein that's easy to get down...
Something about the flavor of oranges makes it really good without nausea...
Keep up good work boss!
